Upload Custom Layers
Bring your own data onto the map: candidate sites, project boundaries, land holdings, survey results or a client's assets, shown against every network on Network Map. Analyst Pro Enterprise
Supported Files
| Format | Typical source | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Shapefile (SHP) | ArcGIS, QGIS, MapInfo and most GIS tools | A shapefile is several files (.shp, .shx, .dbf, .prj); keep them together and make sure the .prj is included |
| GeoJSON | QGIS, web maps, code, the free public API | Use longitude and latitude in WGS 84 (EPSG:4326) |
| KML | Google Earth and many field apps | Export as KML from Google Earth's My Places |
Points, lines and polygons are all supported. Keep files to the area and attributes you need: smaller files upload and draw faster.
How to Upload a Layer
- Open Data & Layers in the sidebar and choose Add Custom Layer, or choose Add custom layer from the map tools.
- Choose Upload File and select the file on your computer.
- The layer appears under Session Layers, switched on, with its own colour.
- Click your features on the map to see their attributes, just like network assets.
If an upload fails you will see There was an error when uploading your data. Check the file opens in a GIS tool, that a shapefile has all its parts, and that coordinates are in WGS 84. If it still fails, email the file to support@networkmap.energy.
Save, Find and Delete Layers
- Save: right-click the layer under Session Layers and choose Save Layer. It is switched off and moved to Saved Layers, where it stays with your account. Unsaved session layers are cleared when you reset the map.
- Find: type its name into the Network Filter; matches show under My layers and Saved.
- Show again: tick it in Saved Layers.
- Delete: right-click it in Saved Layers, choose Delete User Layer, then Delete. This cannot be undone.
Working With Your Layer
- Measure from your sites to the network with Measure Distance and Nearest Neighbour. See Spatial Analysis Tools.
- See what is nearby: right-click a site and use Nearby Layers to switch on the networks around it.
- Check the land with satellite, terrain and 3D basemaps. See Basemaps, 3D and Street View.
- Carry it into a project: with a Current Project selected, your work follows you into Project Modelling and Engineering Studies Pro.
Preparing Data in QGIS
- Open your layer in QGIS and right-click it, then choose Export → Save Features As.
- Choose GeoJSON (or ESRI Shapefile) and set the CRS to EPSG:4326 - WGS 84.
- Untick fields you do not need and save. Upload the file as above.
Privacy
Uploaded layers are stored against your own account; there is no public sharing of custom layers. Network Map is ISO/IEC 27001 certified; see Security and Compliance.
