AI Assistants (MCP)

Network Map's MCP server connects Network Map to Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants that support the Model Context Protocol, so you can ask about networks, assets and markets in plain language. Pro Enterprise

What You Need

  • A Network Map Pro or Enterprise plan. The MCP Server card appears in My Account on these plans.
  • An AI assistant that can add a custom MCP server (a "connector" or "custom integration" in most assistants).

Create a Token

  1. In Network Map, open My Account from the user menu and find the MCP Server card. The server address is shown as https://mcp.networkmap.energy/mcp.
  2. Enter a Token label so you can recognise the token later, for example "Claude" or "ChatGPT" (up to 80 characters).
  3. Choose an Expiry: 30, 90, 180 or 365 days. 90 days is the default.
  4. Choose Generate token.
  5. The MCP token generated window shows a Connection URL and the Token. Copy them now with Copy connection URL or Copy token: they are not shown again.
Keep the connection URL private. It contains your token, so anyone who has it can reach Network Map as you until the token expires or is revoked.

Connect Your Assistant

The connection URL has the form https://mcp.networkmap.energy/mcp/t/<token> and already includes your token, so you can add it to an assistant that offers no authentication for a custom server.

Claude

  1. In Claude, open the settings for connectors and choose to add a custom connector.
  2. Give it a name such as "Network Map" and paste the connection URL.
  3. Save, then enable the connector in a conversation.

ChatGPT and Other Assistants

Add a custom MCP server or connector, paste the connection URL and choose no authentication. The exact menu names differ between assistants and change over time; look for "connectors", "MCP servers" or "integrations" in the assistant's settings.

What to Ask

Once connected, ask in plain language. For example:

  • "Which transmission substations are near Dubbo, New South Wales?"
  • "Which network businesses operate in Texas?"
  • "What are current prices and demand across the market regions?"
  • "Summarise the binding constraints in the wholesale electricity market right now."

Answers are based on Network Map data available to your account. As with any AI assistant, check important figures against Network Map itself before relying on them.

Manage and Revoke Tokens

  • The MCP Server card lists every token with its label, status (Active or Revoked), a short prefix, and its created and expiry dates.
  • To revoke a token, choose the revoke icon beside it and confirm with Revoke. It stops working immediately.
  • Create one token per assistant or device, so you can revoke one without affecting the others.
  • When a token expires, generate a new one and update the connection URL in your assistant.

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to try
No MCP Server card in My AccountMCP needs a Pro or Enterprise plan. Check Plan Type in My Account.
The assistant says it cannot connectCheck you pasted the full connection URL, including the token, and that the token is Active and not expired.
You lost the connection URLIt cannot be shown again. Revoke the old token and generate a new one.
Answers seem out of dateNetwork Map data is refreshed daily; market data follows each market's own publication timing.

Security teams: tokens are labelled, expiring and revocable. See Security and Compliance.
